Adapted from Alexandra Bracken’s book series of the same name, the Dystopian future style story takes place in alternate-America type of internment camps where the remaining population of children live and continue to survive after a deadly disease kills 98% of youth under the age of twenty. After a sixteen year old girl discovers the truth about the camps, she escapes and joins a group of teenagers in an attempt to flee from the deceitful government. Amandla Stenberg of The Hunger Games stars in the film as Ruby, a 16-year-old with telekinetic powers. Mandy Moore was also cast in the film, and plays an altruistic doctor who crusades against the government’s persecution. This feature is the first live-action film for director Jennifer Yuh Nelson, known for her work on the Kung Fu Panda franchise.
