If you believe you have what it takes to be an independent filmmaker, you’ll want to ensure you follow a recipe for success.  There are many budding actors who believe if they can only put together an Indie film that garners some attention, the rest will be history.  But, all too often, these films flop.  Why?  Because they are made with tight budgets and limited resources.  So, there’s an art to getting it done the right away.

There are a few things you must remember so your film doesn’t end up getting brushed aside.  Putting together a successful piece is not easy.  It’s time-consuming and grueling.  Following these steps, according to Forbes, will help you pull off a masterpiece.

The first thing you’ll need to consider is writing an appealing script.  If your script is boring, unbelievable or seems unnatural, it will not make it.  Quality productions that get noticed always start with a great script.  Write a draft, then another and another until you have the perfect piece.  Par down anything that is unnecessary or doesn’t add anything to the plot.  And, gather the opinions of others if you can.  If you don’t feel comfort soliciting feedback, you may as well stop right there.

Next comes the acting talent.  Anyone who understands Indie film-making knows there is a very limited budget the crew is working with.  It is possible, however, to get some great acting talent for free.  It seems like a long shot, but it doesn’t have to be.  Many actors, like you, are hoping to get their start in the industry, and in order to do so, they are hoping to build their reels.  Host some auditions and don’t be afraid of continuing to host calls until you’ve found everyone you need.

Now you’ll have to figure out where this thing is going to take place.  Not only will you have to work within the constrains of your budget, but you’ll need to consider some not-so-obvious details as well.  For one, you’ll need to think about lighting and select spots that have a lot of natural light or that are otherwise very well-lit.  You’ll also want to shoot in locations with limited background nose and distractions.

Properly controlling the camera is also key.  You’ll need to understand basic filmography and be unafraid of asking others for their talent as needed.  Understand what you’ll need equipment-wise and how to position the camera in order to effectively tell your tale.  Learn all you can about positioning and transitioning, controlling movement, and coordinating what will be in each frame.

Indie films are a great way to get your foot in the door.  This is your shot!  Preparation is key.  Making sure you’ve put all the pieces into place ahead of time will save you from a monster headache when you actually begin shooting.
